Louis Spohr – “The Last Judgement”

‘The Last Judgement’ and the Revelation of St. John

The concept of ‘The Last Judgement’ (Die letzten Dinge) oratorio by Louis Spohr deals with apocalyptic visions of the end of the world as found in the Book of Revelation of St John in the New Testament (the Apocalypse of John).

Spohr’s innovative approach to the oratorio, with the integration of amateur musicians and professional standards, as well as the use of Old Testament and New Testament texts, made ‘The Last Judgement’ an outstanding work of its time.

The premiere in 1826 was a great success, and made the work an important repertoire piece in Germany and beyond, especially in England.
